Gemini in Gmail: what it can do, what it can't, and what it costs

Yes, Gmail has a built-in AI assistant. Gemini can summarise threads, write and polish drafts, and suggest meeting times. It works when you ask, inside the email you are looking at. Here is exactly what that covers, what it does not, and which plan you need.

What Gemini in Gmail can do

According to Google's Gmail help pages, Gemini in Gmail can:

  • Summarise an email thread.
  • Create new emails or refine an existing draft ("Help me write").
  • Propose meeting times from your Google Calendar inside a draft ("Help me schedule"). The recipient books by clicking "Book time for all guests".
  • Answer questions about your inbox in the side panel.
  • Suggest inbox actions, which Google says are never applied until you confirm.

What it does not do

Gemini in Gmail is reactive. It helps with the email in front of you, when you open the panel. Google's help pages do not describe any of these:

  • Tracking which of your sent emails are still waiting on a reply.
  • Running a scheduling conversation by email and booking the slot the other person picks.
  • Finding promises in your mail, yours and other people's, and following them to delivery.
  • Emailing you a brief each morning with drafts already written.
  • Learning your writing style from your sent mail and drafting replies in the background.

Which plan you need

Google says Gemini in Gmail requires an eligible Google Workspace or Google AI plan.

When Gemini is enough

If you mostly need help phrasing a difficult email or catching up on a long thread, Gemini in Gmail is already there and you may already pay for it. You do not need another tool for that.

When you need an assistant on top

If the work that eats your day is the tracking, who has not replied, what you promised, the meeting that took six emails, then you need something that runs when you are not looking. Momo does that inside Gmail and Google Calendar: drafts in your voice saved to Gmail Drafts, follow-up tracking, promises, scheduling by email and a morning brief. It works alongside Gemini, and it never sends without your tap.

Control

Nothing leaves without you

Every email and every cancellation shows up as a card first. Edit it, send it, or discard it. Sends wait 10 seconds so you can undo. Everything Momo reads, drafts and sends is on the Activity page.
