Snooze takes an email out of your inbox and brings it back at a time you choose. It is the cleanest way to say "not now" to a thread without losing it. It is also often used as a follow-up system, which it is not built for. Here is how snooze works on each platform, where the mail goes, and how it compares with Google Tasks, Gmail nudges and a tracker.

## How does snooze work in Gmail?

Hover over an email on the web and click the clock icon, or open it in the app and choose `Snooze` from the `More` menu, then pick a later day and time. Gmail removes the email from the inbox and returns it to the top of the inbox at that time. Until then it lives under `Snoozed` in the left menu, and the search `in:snoozed` finds it. Nothing is archived or deleted; snooze only changes when the email appears, as described on [Google's help page](https://support.google.com/mail/answer/7622010).

## Snooze an email on the web

The email vanishes from the inbox immediately and comes back at the chosen time, at the top of the inbox.

1. Open Gmail and point at the email in your inbox.
2. Click the `Snooze` clock icon that appears on the right.
3. Choose a later day and time, such as tomorrow or next week, or set your own.
4. To snooze several at once, tick them and click `Snooze` at the top. If it is not shown, click `More` then `Snooze`.

## Snooze an email on Android

To snooze several messages, select them first, then tap `More` and `Snooze`.

1. Open the Gmail app and open the email.
2. Tap `More` at the top right, then `Snooze`.
3. Choose a later day and time.
4. Optional: make snooze a swipe. Tap `Menu`, `Settings`, `General settings`, `Mail swipe actions`, then change the right or left swipe to `Snooze`.

## Snooze an email on iPhone or iPad

The swipe setting lives in a different place on each platform, but the snooze steps and the `Snoozed` folder are the same.

1. Open the Gmail app and open the email.
2. Tap `More` at the top right, then `Snooze`.
3. Choose a later day and time.
4. Optional: tap `Menu`, `Settings`, `Inbox customizations`, `Mail swipe actions` and set a swipe to `Snooze`, then tap `Done`.

## Where snoozed emails go, and how to get one back early

Snoozed mail is under `Snoozed` in the left menu on the web and under `Menu` in the app, and `in:snoozed` in search lists it too. Open the thread from there whenever you want it; you do not have to wait for it to return. If you want it back on a different day, snooze it again from the `Snoozed` list and pick the new time.

## The trap: snooze is not a follow-up system

Snooze is excellent at one job and quietly bad at the job it usually gets.

- Snooze only works on threads you remember to snooze. The email you fired off between meetings and forgot about is exactly the one that never gets snoozed.
- Snooze does not know whether a reply came. If you snooze a sent thread for Friday as a reminder to chase, and the reply arrives on Wednesday, the Friday return is now noise unless you remember to clear it.
- A snoozed thread is invisible until it returns. For a thread with a hard deadline that is the point; for a thread you might need to answer a question about in the meantime, it is a liability.
- There is no list of what you are waiting on. `Snoozed` shows what you deferred, mixed together, with no sense of who owes whom.
- Snooze on the web, Android and iPhone offers suggested times plus your own pick, but nothing recurring. For a weekly check-in you have to snooze again each time.

## Snooze vs Google Tasks vs nudges vs a tracker

Pick by the question you are trying to answer. "When should I look at this?" is snooze. "What do I need to do about this?" is Tasks. "Who has not replied to me?" is a tracker, with nudges as a free partial answer. ## The AI shortcut

[Momo AI's follow-up tracking](/follow-up-tracking) replaces the snooze-as-reminder habit. It watches every thread you sent, so you do not have to remember to snooze anything, drops a thread the moment a reply arrives, and lists the rest in your morning brief with the days waiting. When a thread has gone quiet for the number of days you choose, it drafts the follow-up in your writing style to Gmail Drafts. Snooze stays for what it is good at: incoming mail you want back at a specific time.

## Questions

### Where do snoozed emails go in Gmail?

Under `Snoozed` in the left menu on the web and under `Menu` in the app. The search `in:snoozed` lists them too. They return to the top of the inbox at the time you chose.

### How do I unsnooze an email in Gmail?

Open `Snoozed`, open the thread and deal with it, or snooze it again to a new time. Opening it early does not wait for the return time.

### Does snoozing an email archive it?

No. Snooze only removes the email from the inbox view until the chosen time. It is not archived or deleted and stays searchable.

### Is snooze or a reminder better for follow-ups?

Snooze works if you remember to snooze every sent thread and clear the ones that get replies. A tracker does both automatically, which is why it suits follow-ups better.
