Newsletters are a third of most inboxes and none of the decisions. Gmail can find them with one search, unsubscribe from several at once, and filter the rest to a label you read when you choose. The whole clean-up takes about 15 minutes. Here is the method, and the AI shortcut that does the sorting for you.

## How do I clean up newsletters in Gmail?

Search `unsubscribe` to find them, use Gmail's Manage subscriptions page to unsubscribe from the ones you never read, create a filter so the rest skip the inbox and land under a `Newsletters` label, then archive the backlog with `unsubscribe older_than:30d`. Nothing is deleted, and you can read the label whenever you choose.

## Step 1: see what you are subscribed to

Gmail has a Manage subscriptions view (in the left menu on the web and in the Gmail app, under the inbox options) that lists senders by how often they email you, with an Unsubscribe button on each. If you do not see it, the search `unsubscribe` in the inbox finds nearly every newsletter, because bulk senders include an unsubscribe link by law.

Sort by frequency. Anything emailing more than weekly that you have not opened in a month goes.

## Step 2: unsubscribe, don't just archive

Use Gmail's own Unsubscribe link at the top of the message or the button on Manage subscriptions; it uses the sender's List-Unsubscribe header and is safer than clicking links in the body. For senders you do not recognise, block rather than unsubscribe: clicking unsubscribe on spam confirms your address is live.

## Step 3: filter the keepers out of the inbox

The trap: some real people sign emails with a footer containing "unsubscribe" (sales reps, some HR tools). Check the `Newsletters` label for a week and add `-from:` exceptions for anyone caught.

## Step 4: archive the backlog

Search `unsubscribe older_than:30d -is:starred`, select all, "Select all conversations that match", archive. [How to bulk archive Gmail safely](/blog/bulk-archive-gmail-safely) has the operators for a bigger clean-up and what to check before you select all.

## Step 5: read newsletters on purpose

Pick a time, open the `Newsletters` label, read what you want, archive the rest with select all. Twenty minutes on a Friday replaces a hundred interruptions. If a newsletter never makes the Friday cut twice, unsubscribe.

## The AI shortcut

[Momo AI's inbox triage](/inbox-triage) does steps 1, 3 and 4 without a filter to maintain. It reads the last 7 days, uses the List-Unsubscribe header and Gmail's own category labels to identify newsletters and promos without sending them to an AI, and shows one card: "12 newsletters, 4 notifications, 3 cold pitches. Archive?" One tap clears them, undo puts them back for 7 days, and starred mail is never touched. The morning brief shows the count each day. Nothing is deleted and nothing is sent. ## Questions

### How do I unsubscribe from all newsletters in Gmail at once?

Use Gmail's Manage subscriptions page, which lists senders with an Unsubscribe button each. Gmail has no single "unsubscribe all", but the list makes it a few minutes.

### Is it safe to click unsubscribe in Gmail?

Gmail's own Unsubscribe button (using the List-Unsubscribe header) is safe. Avoid unsubscribe links in the body of mail from senders you do not recognise; block them instead.

### How do I filter newsletters in Gmail?

Create a filter with `unsubscribe` in "Has the words", tick Skip the Inbox and apply a `Newsletters` label. Add `-from:` exceptions for real people caught by it.

### Can AI clean up newsletters in Gmail?

Yes. Momo AI identifies newsletters from headers and Gmail categories and archives them with one undoable tap, without deleting anything.
